Plankton and particle imaging: moving beyond classification towards ecosystem understanding

Session Description:
Plankton form the basis of marine ecosystems, driving global biogeochemical cycles, and serving as crucial indicators of environmental change. Recent breakthroughs in imaging systems are transforming how we observe plankton in their natural habitats, and generating vast quantities of data.
Technological developments in data collection have been matched by step changes in processing driven by machine learning applications. Meanwhile, advances in computer vision are boosting image classification and unlocking new ecological insights from huge image datasets. New challenges are now emerging, particularly as high-frequency data is collected faster than it can be processed.
We have now arrived at a critical juncture and ask whether it is time to take stock and review the current landscape.
In this session, we invite proposals that consider how we harness these developments for improved ecological understanding, monitoring and health assessments. Submissions may cover data quality control and storage; instrument intercalibration; bridging the gap with traditional sampling methods, or integration with other techniques to reveal new insights; applications to routine or real-time monitoring; examples of overcoming technological or logistical barriers; and that discuss issues of best practice with regard to training image data for taxonomic accuracy.
