Marine Environment Reanalyses and Four-Dimensional Data Driven Models : Progress and Applications
Session ID#: 259666
Session Description:
This session explores recent advancements and applications of Marine Environmental Reanalyses (MERs) and four-dimensional observation-based products, both crucial for understanding the blue (physical), white (sea ice), and green (biogeochemical) ocean. MERs integrate observations with numerical models to reconstruct ocean history, while the growing availability of high-quality biogeochemical data from global programs such as OneArgo and GO-SHIP has enabled the development of four-dimensional (4D), observation-based data products that offer unprecedented insights into the variability and dynamics of ocean biogeochemistry. These two approaches provide a comprehensive and complementary framework for characterizing past and present ocean states, evaluating model performance, and informing climate and ecosystem assessments.
We invite contributions that (1) present new MER products or mapped, observation-based data products; (2) study essential ocean and marine variables (mean state, trend, budgets) such as ocean heat, transport, sea ice, primary productivity, carbon cycling, ocean acidification, deoxygenation, fisheries, and ecosystem management; and (3) demonstrate applications in uncertainty quantification, model benchmarking, or parameter optimization. Research involving multiple MERs or community-led initiatives, such as the MER-EP intercomparison project and the 4D-BGC Working Group, is particularly welcome.
