The Power of High-Resolution Proxy archives for Constraining Environmental Baselines, Evaluating Regime Shifts and Climate Variability
Session ID#: 259693
Session Description:
An improved understanding of natural and anthropogenic climate variability, including recent baseline shifts, is constrained by the limited length and sparse coverage of instrumental observations of key environmental parameters across all ocean basins. High-resolution proxy archives from a variety of ocean regions, from shallow coastal seas to the open ocean, offer exciting opportunities to reconstruct seasonal to decadal, natural and anthropogenic climate and environmental variability. These reconstructions advance our understanding of the key role the oceans play in the coupled climate system. The generation and interpretation of proxy data from sub-annually to annually resolved marine archives has advanced in recent decades due to strategies including growth increment cross-dating, precision micro-sampling, and advanced imaging techniques. This session invites contributions from highly temporally resolved marine archives such as corals, bivalves, fish otoliths, and coralline algae, and marine sediment cores or terrestrial archives such as tree rings, ice cores, and lake varves to identify and understand marine baseline variability, thresholds, feedbacks, interactions, and regime shifts. We particularly welcome submissions that present methodological advances in proxy calibration and chronological control, as well as applications of high-resolution proxy data that improves understanding of the drivers, processes, and consequences of marine climate and ecological change.
