Digital Twins of the Ocean: Science and Innovation for a Sustainable Future

Session ID#: 259799

Session Description:
Digital Twins of the Ocean (DTOs) are emerging tools, offering dynamic, integrated representations of marine environments. Combining real-time observations, process-based models, and AI-enhanced analytics, DTOs enable interactive simulations that deepen our understanding of ocean variability, climate impacts, and socio-ecological interactions. These systems support scenario testing for sustainable management, including spatial planning, ecosystem resilience, pollution mitigation, and resource use.

This session invites contributions that advance the development, application, and scientific foundations of DTOs, in line with the UN Ocean Decade program DITTO. We welcome modelling, data integration, and machine learning innovations that enhance predictive capacity and support exploration of interactions among climate drivers, ocean processes, and socio-ecological systems. Studies showcasing DTOs in spatial planning, ecosystem management, pollution prevention, fisheries, offshore energy, and coastal resilience are encouraged. Submissions highlighting interoperability, transdisciplinary approaches, socio-economic integration, and stakeholder co-design are particularly welcome.

Aligned with DITTO and the IEEE P3501, this session highlights the importance of standardization in DTO development. Contributions addressing engineering frameworks, data models, and interface standards are essential for cross-domain integration and long-term scalability. By fostering collaboration across science, industry, and policy, the session aims to build a shared blueprint for interoperable DTOs to inform efforts toward a sustainable and resilient future.
