Hydrodynamics of Natural and Nature-based Solutions: From Science to Scalable Solutions

Session ID#: 259873

Session Description:
Due to the growing impacts of climate change and sea-level rise, along with the drive to cost-effectively address these impacts working with nature, there is increasing interest to understand the influence of natural and nature-based infrastructure — such as reefs, dunes, wetlands, and mangroves — on coastal hydrodynamics and morphodynamics, on reducing coastal hazards, enhancing resilience, and providing multiple benefits for ecosystems and communities. We invite presentations on all aspects of hydrodynamics and morphodynamics at scales from centimeters to kilometers, including those processes driven by storm waves, sea level variability (including storm surges) and tides, and studies based on field observations, laboratory experiments, and/or numerical modelling, especially where they inform risk reduction at meaningful scales. We also seek work that explores the historical dynamics and future potential of natural and nature-based infrastructure, including how past landscape changes can guide design and placement. Equally important are case studies addressing practical challenges, including constructability, permitting, and performance monitoring. This session aims to bring together scientists, engineers, and practitioners to share knowledge and identify pathways for scaling up nature-based approaches in ways that are scientifically sound, socially acceptable, and operationally feasible.
