This presentation explores the intimacies – romances, friendships, school ties, and family bonds – that forged connections between militants in 1970s Argentina, as well as the ways in which armed political actions disrupted or destroyed such relationships. It considers what documenting and analyzing these forms of intimacy can contribute to a study of militancy in 1970s Argentina as well as in broader historical contexts. By showing how militants’ actions were not only political but also made within social networks, it argues that identifying and analyzing these relationships can answer questions about motivations and decisions that examining political ideologies and alliances alone cannot fully resolve.
