Session Abstract
Coit Tower is the site of the largest single project completed during the Public Works of Art Project, the first New Deal program of work-relief for visual artists (1933-34); 25 artists completed 28 murals, nearly all in fresco buono, depicting aspects of contemporary California. Rincon Annex is the site of the largest New Deal art project by a single artist, 27 separate murals comprising 2,574 square feet, depicting the history of northern California, by Anton Refregier (1942, 1946-48). Thus, these sites present the beginning and the end of the many New Deal art projects. Both projects were attacked, both at the time of completion and subsequently as being Communist propaganda; both are now on the National Register of Historic Places. The panel is likely to be interest to scholars of the New Deal, anti-Communism, California, and the relation between cultural expression and politics.
