Session Abstract

As graduate students and junior scholars, budding historians are implored to take their work seriously, to make daily time for writing, and to “publish or perish”. But what does the act of writing, of creating new history, actually look like? Is it worth it to read up on best practices, or do all writers need to develop their own methods? In this roundtable, four historians from across specializations will discuss their own systems and approaches to writing and how they came to them, sharing advice (both good and bad) they were given along the way. The roundtable will also discuss how writing evolves past the dissertation stage, and what works in further article-writing and book creation. Graduate students at the writing stage and those needing to boost their writing strategies will find lots of inspiration here; seasoned historians, please come and share your own experiences, this is intended to be a productive, crowd-sourced professional development opportunity.
