Session Abstract

Over the past years, historians at AHA have been exploring digital humanities from different perspectives. Discussants have raised considerations about mapping, digital storytelling, as well as data visualizations. Each of those projects rests on and necessitates excellent, accurate, and clean data. Yet, only a few historians are trained on how to think about data, much less on how to handle data or teach students about it effectively.

This panel brings together teachers and data specialists to discuss how to understand data for the historian and teach solid data practices to an undergraduate or graduate classroom. Some discussants will engage the concept of data with an emphasis on how to teach good data practices in the classroom. Others will talk about different assignments and support they’ve provided their students in order to emphasize practice alongside the theory. While some emphasize rigorous instruction inside the classroom, others have ventured into interdisciplinary collaborations into wider communities. The goal of the roundtable, however, is to provide a space to share sound and ethical data practices from a pedagogical perspective.
