Session Abstract
The Toynbee Prize Foundation continues its mission to explore and extend our understanding of and engagement with Global History by together innovative scholarship across the early modern and modern eras, in a roundtable bringing that will engage the potential of global history at its intersections with the new history of Capitalism and the new international history. It gathers the authors of new studies of specifically economic actors and economic questions from the perspective of their significance in shaping a view onto the global past: From the 17th and 18th century history of European 'factory' establishments in Asian port cities, the 19th and 20th century history of the global struggle to bring food, water, and shelter to all, to the invisible global influence of the International Chamber of Commerce, and the global role of the stock exchange. The roundtable will investigate all kinds of economic actors, across a range of institutional and political landscapes. Our aim is to understand the full potential of global history, as we view the political and social through new economic lenses.
