Session Abstract
In this roundtable, faculty who participated in the History Gateways project will discuss how revisions to introductory-level history courses have both fostered and drawn from cross-disciplinary collaborations and institutional initiatives. History Gateways asked faculty to redesign courses in order to improve student success and corresponding institutional retention rates among minority, first generation, and low-income students. Building on these efforts, the participants in this roundtable used these same tools and ideas to build outward within our institutions. We will discuss the use of Gateways data at the institutional level to promote additional redesign projects, the role of the history gateway course in general education and other cross-disciplinary programs, and individual interdisciplinary course collaborations. In each of these examples, we ask how the history gateway course can strengthen student learning across majors, transform pedagogical practices in our discipline and beyond, and be at the forefront of building a more equitable college experience.
