Session Abstract

Podcasting is a rapidly evolving field of digital public history in which historian podcasters are helping audiences to explore complex historical topics and temporalities through the audio medium. It encourages historians to organize, distill, and communicate rigorous scholarship to multiple publics while shedding light on history as a discipline, craft, and storytelling art form for professional and general audiences alike. In this roundtable discussion, panelists will explore how historians as podcasters undertake this vital work. Contributors will consider the challenges and opportunities of transforming scholarly research into engaging and accessible audio projects; podcasts’ utility as a community-centered pedagogical method for reaching audiences beyond the historical profession; and podcasts as a digital forum for creating vibrant conversations about the craft of writing history and the significance of doing history in the twenty-first century. The goal of this roundtable is to generate a conversation amongst the participants and the audience about podcasting as a medium for conveying historical knowledge, as an art form, and as a collaborative enterprise. Each participant will offer a brief synopsis of one of their podcast projects, along with a clip from an episode that illustrates their project’s methodological and scholarly contributions. Presenters will then engage in a moderated discussion with each other about questions raised during their respective opening remarks before taking questions from the audience.
