Session Abstract

This roundtable session addresses strategies for creating an equitable learning environment in the history classroom with a particular focus on lower division education and the history survey. The session will feature faculty members who will share their experiences and insights on how to cultivate a more inclusive approach to teaching history survey courses, including courses on US and the world via traditional classroom models and online learning. They will examine broadening historical narratives to become more inclusive, the use of open access resources, the use of data to assess best practices, and the role of history instructors in advocacy for campus equity initiatives. The panelists will also explore strategies for teaching historical narratives of minoritized groups, challenging students to question their own assumptions and biases, and promoting critical thinking and analysis. Ultimately, this session hopes to foster a discussion about the need for pedagogy and practice to advance dialogue and respect for diverse viewpoints, as well as the importance of self-reflection and ongoing learning for educators themselves.
