Session Abstract
We all know that history majors have been falling, but why? And what can we do about it? This session will explore the question from three angles. Reginald Ellis (Florida A&M University) will describe some of the challenges for attracting history majors, particularly in an increasingly polarized political climate for the discipline. Archana Venkatesh (Clemson University) will offer the perspective of a new member of the discipline, trying to negotiate the current challenges alongside an early career in the discipline. Finally, Robert Townsend (American Academy of Arts and Sciences) will offer answers to concerns about the career prospects of history majors with fresh data about their occupations and careers, and some suggestions for responding to the worries of students and their parents. Each of the presenters will speak for about 10 minutes to leave ample time for a conversation with the audience.
