FOSBE 2005, the first conference on Foundations of Systems Biology in Engineering (http://fosbe.org/), was held August 7-10, 2005, at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and was sponsored by CACHE Corporation. In this talk, highlights of the presentations will be reviewed, and perspectives drawn from the meeting will be discussed.
