Relationship between heat transfer and heterogeneous chemical reactions in the biomass layer through the pyrolysis of wet woody biomass was investigated experimentally. The results obtained of pyrolysis showed that the average temperature in the biomass layer increases slowly compared with the rate of change of the set temperature. This tendency did not vary for samples with different average particle sizes (1.1 mm < Dp,50 < 11 mm). For the biomass without adding water ( j = 0wt %), by comparing heat flow rate in the biomass layer with the heat source, there are the evaporation of water and two exothermic chemical reactions; the exothermic reactions coincided with two peaks observed in the flow rate of generated gas. CO2 was mainly generated in the first exothermic region while H2 was mainly generated in the second region. For the biomass with adding water (j =60 wt %), it was difficult to separate the chemical reactions in j =0wt % because the heat transfer had only one exothermic region except for the evaporation.
