| Fundamental Investigations Of Sulfation And Desulfation In Lean Nox Trap Catalysts | ||
| Todd J. Toops and Josh A. Pihl, Fuels, Engines and Emissions Research Center, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, 2360 Cherahala Blvd., Knoxville, TN 37932 One of the key barriers to the implementation of lean NOx traps for use in exhaust aftertreatment applications is poisoning of the NOx storage material by sulfur species in the exhaust gas. This investigation uses microreactor and DRIFTS experiments on model and fully formulated catalyst samples to quantify the impacts of sulfation and desulfation conditions on the amount of sulfur stored and the ease with which it can be removed. The objective of the work is to understand the mechanisms for sulfation and desulfation. This understanding will allow identification of operating conditions that could minimize the impact of sulfur exposure and will enable design of optimal desulfation strategies.
