Memories…In 1962 two young fellows published two seminal papers stressing the necessity of expressing the deactivation of a catalyst by coke formation in terms of its content of deactivating agent, instead of time. That leads in tubular reactors to coke profiles depending upon the way coke is formed and influencing the reactor performance and the catalyst regeneration in very different ways. Today the coke formation and its effect in complex commercial processes can and needs to be dealt with by the same fundamental approach as used in the kinetic modeling of the “main” reactions. Examples are given of a fundamental approach of coking in the methanol-to-olefins process on SAPO 34 and in the catalytic cracking of vacuum gas oil.
