The pyrolysis of woody biomass has been studied experimentally in attending to the mass and heat transfer. In the rapid pyrolysis reaction, two different pyrolysis rates were obtained, with different reactions taking place depending on the temperature for a process producing tar + water and a process producing gas. This implies that there are different gas generation processes. For the first region, for 200 ºC < TS < 300 ºC, volume of gaseous products didn't change and main four gases (CO2, CO, CH4, H2) were not detected by Gas-Chromatography. Therefore the product is moisture. For the second region, the pyrolysis rate increased dramatically at 300 °C < TS < 400 °C because the decomposition of the dried biomass could be occurred. For the third region, the rate increased slightly at 400 ºC < TS < 600 ºC and for the final region, the rate decreased slightly at 650 ºC < TS < 800 ºC. In the 3rd and 4th regions, both the decomposition of generated and the decomposition of generated char can be mainly occurred.
