Cybertools For Materials Research, Education, And Collaboration In Chemical Engineering And Beyond
Sharon C. Glotzer and Christopher R. Iacovella, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-2136

Advances in cyberinfrastructure have revolutionized the entertainment industry and social networks with such tools as YouTube, ITunes, Facebook, MySpace, etc. However, the chemical engineering community has yet to take advantage of the underlying cyberinfrastructure that makes tools like these possible. In this talk we explore current cyber technologies, including wikis and data repositories, and their usefulness for chemical engineering research, education, and collaboration. We describe MatDL, a materials digital library now under development (www.matdl.org) and demonstrate its use in teaching concepts in soft materials and simulation.

This work is a collaboration between the University of Michigan and Kent State University and is sponsored by the National Science Foundation under grant DUE-0532831.
