| Effect of Bsa Treatment on Batch and Continuous Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Pretreated Corn Stover | ||
| Michael Studer, Simone Brethauer, Bin Yang and Charles E. Wyman, CE-CERT Bourns College of Engineering, University of California Riverside, 1084 Columbia Avenue, Riverside, CA 92507 The masking of lignin in pretreated corn stover by addition of non-catalytic proteins (e.g. BSA as a model protein) has been shown to enhance enzymatic cellulose hydrolysis. These additives are believed to preferentially attach to lignin and therefore reduce nonproductive binding of valuable enzymes to lignin. The effect of BSA masking on performance was studied in batch experiments for different cellulosic substrates, BSA concentrations, BSA addition modes, treatment temperatures, and hydrolysis times. The insights gained were then applied to continuous hydrolysis of pure cellulose (Avicel) and dilute acid pretreated corn stover with particular attention focused on the effects of BSA and its addition mode on performance. The results from batch and continuous hydrolysis will be compared, and the effect of key operating parameters on hydrolysis performance will be discussed. Extended Abstract Status: Not Uploaded | ||
