A Project-Based Introduction to Data Analysis for Freshmen
Dr. Stephanie Farrell, Zenaida Otero-Gephardt and Robert P. Hesketh, Chemical Engineering, Rowan University, Department of Chemical Engineering, 201 Mullica Hill Road, Glassboro, NJ 08028-1701

Hands-on experiences are an excellent vehicle to introduce students to design of experiments (DOE) and data analysis. DOE and data analysis techniques are cornerstones in the ISO and Six-Sigma requirements so prevalent in the chemical process industry. By linking hands-on experiences with concepts in experimental design and data analysis, students benefit from actively designing experiments, operating the equipment and analyzing the results to obtain a conclusion. This process strengthens students' understanding of engineering concepts and of how experimental design and data analysis are used to optimize experimentation and answer engineering questions. An automatic drip coffee maker is used to demonstrate the principles of experimental design and data analysis to Freshman Engineering students.
