| Russ Miller, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, SUNY-Buffalo, Buffalo, NY 14260 Cyberinfrastructure provides for the transparent and ubiquitous application of technologies central to contemporary science and engineering, including high-end computing, networking, visualization, data warehouses, science gateways, and virtual organizations, to name a few. In this talk, we provide an overview of our Cyberinfrastructure Laboratory. We discuss the status of our efforts to develop and deploy critical infrastructure that is necessary to perform high-end simulation and modeling, including myriad algorithms, portals, interfaces, and general middleware. The middleware we have developed is driven by a desire to free the end-users from dealing with the complexities associated with various high-end computing environments, including heterogeneous compute, storage, networking, and visualization systems. This allows the user to concentrate on their disciplinary efforts and provides a platform upon which they may transparently collect, manage, organize, analyze, and visualize data without regard for underlying details, such as the exact location of where these data-centric efforts occur. Since computational and data grids currently serve as critical infrastructure for most activities in cyberinfrastructure, our Cyberinfrastructure Laboratory has developed and deployed several grids, including an experimental Buffalo-based grid, a Western New York Grid, and most recently, the New York State Grid. This later grid serves as the foundation for a grass-roots New York State Cyberinfrastructure Initiative that was established in the fall of 2006. The grids developed by our Lab can be characterized as heterogeneous, general-purpose, and persistent. They also present the user with an integrated computational and data grid. In this talk, we discuss the development and details of these grids and their associated middleware. We also discuss the status of the grass-roots New York State Cyberinfrastructure Initiative.
