Abstract:

Conducting polymer nanostructures are emerging as a material of construction for various applications because of ease of processing, near ambient synthesis conditions, biocompatibility and tunable electrical conductivity. For example, the electrical conductivity of conducting polymers can be reversibly modulated from an insulator to almost metallic state by controlling the dopant type and level.

Although many examples of conducting polymer nanostructures based devices have been demonstrated, their practical use is greatly limited because of the inability to spatially manipulate and address these nanostructures. Controlled assembly of nanowires into functional devices is necessary to realize commercial applications of these structures.

In this work, we demonstrate the magnetic field assisted assembly of multi-segmented nanowires with conducting polymer middle section. Using magnetic interaction between ferromagnetic electrodes and magnetic section integrated on nanowires, a single multi-segmented nanowire was assembled across the electrodes and their unique electrical, optical, and sensing properties were examined.
