Abet Accreditation as An Exercise in Cooperation

Richard L. Long, New Mexico State University, Chemical Engineering Department, P.O. Box 30001, MSC 3805, Las Cruces, NM 88003-8001

The ABET 2000 accreditation requirements constitute a cascade control loop process that requires cooperation among the stakeholders of a program to achieve success. The "program objectives loop" becomes the "master loop" for the "program outcomes loop" as the "slave loop". The ABET 2000 requirements force the program to demonstrate that it has identified deviations from desired objectives and/or outcomes, measured those deviations, and acted to close the respective loops based on the deviations observed. Stakeholders must provide input to the process of defining the "objectives" and "outcomes" desired. The process requires a much broader and deeper participation and cooperation of stakeholders than the older accreditation requirements.
