With the depletion of fossil fuel reserves and the environmental problems, people pay more attention to look for new alternative energy sources. Biomass is abundant in the world, which the best candidate for the renewable sources of energy. In conventional hydrothermal liquefaction process, liquid acid, such as sulfuric acid, was used as the catalyst for the liquid fuels conversion from biomass. This liquid acid could cause serious environmental and post-processing problems, in addition the corrosion of metallic equipments. In this work, a kind of novel catalyst was chosen for the conversion of biomass. The liquefaction of biomass was carried out in a stainless autoclave with rice husk, pubescens and corn stalk as raw materials, ethylene glycol as liquefaction solvent, Cl-/ZrO2-Fe2O3 as catalyst. The results of X-ray Diffraction (XRD) indicted that ZrO2 and Fe2O3 did not form solid solution. ZrO2 was a monoclinic crystal. Fe2O3 had ¨»- crystal phase. The results of liquefaction process showed that the Cl-/ZrO2-Fe2O3 catalyst had high activity for all three biomass used in this experiment. For instance, corn stalk was completely liquefied at 573K, 3h and 4% (wt % of the reactant) Cl-/ZrO2-Fe2O3. The advantage of using solid super acid is that this catalyst was easily separated and can be recycled. After being used five times of Cl-/ZrO2-Fe2O3, the resident of corn stalk in our novel liquefaction process was under 11%.
