A unique experimental data has been obtained from a 5 ft diameter deep-bed reactor operated at PSRI. The data include particle entrainment rates and local pressure gradients within the bed for gas superfacial velocities ranging from 1.5 to 3.0 ft/s. The commercial engineering software package Barracuda-CPFD [1] was used to perform fully three-dimensional simulations of the bed behavior, and direct comparisons are made to entrainment and pressure gradients. The bed's turbulent fluidization behavior is complex with local gas streamers and bypassing, and Barracuda reveals critical details of these phenomena.
