Utilizing biomass to produce biofuels and chemical products is an important direction for realizing sustainable development in China. Biomass is a kind of renewable resource, but it is also significant to promote an ecological development pattern in biorefinery processes by raising resource efficiency, reducing consumption of energy and water, decreasing waste emission as well as constituting industrial symbiosis products network. Thus, it is possible to reach overall sustainable development of the biorefinery industry.

Tianguan enterprise group locating Henan province currently is the largest fuel ethanol production company in China. In 2005, its output was about 200kt, and will be 450kt in 2006. In this paper, based on Tianguan enterprise group, a biofuel eco-industrial park is designed as follows.

Different biomass raw materials such as corn, wheat, sweet potato, cassava and oil plants are fermented to produce different kinds of products including fuel ethanol, biodiesel, 1,3-propanediol, butanediol, acetone, butanol, lactic acid and dry barm. And bioethanol will be converted into bioethene in the next stage. Byproduct wheat gluten is got when processing corn and wheat, and it is further processed into wheat protein. Distillers grain is used to produce feedstuff. Waste distillage is utilized to generate marsh gas, and it is used to generate power and heat. Some solid waste is used to generate organic fertilizer. Waste gas CO2 is utilized for generating degradable plastic and drinks.

By building such a biofuel eco-industrial park, the system performances will be obviously improved. In 2010, the resource eco-productivity will be raised 25%; energy consumption of unit production value will be reduced 20%; water consumption of unit production value will be reduced 50%; 99% of all solid wastes can be utilized; and CO2 emission will be decreased 50%.
