The electrochemical deposition of Selenium onto activated carbon sorbents was studied as a way to increase mercury uptake in solution. Previous experiments using glutathione and sodium selenite showed that once immersed in solution, the deposited selenium came off of the sorbent and contaminated the solution further. Ongoing experiments are proving successful in depositing selenium electrochemically, which should prevent the selenium from being released from the carbon sorbent.
