In this work, a series of transition metal oxide nanoparticles with or without base metal or metal oxdes are prepared with different methods. These samples are characterized with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), chemisorption, temperature programmed reduction (TPR), temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption (XAS) techniques. The hydrogen production from various biomass are tested over these samples in a fixed bed continuous flow reactor, the products are analyzed with HPGC and HPLC. Comparing the results from the samples with and without base metals, we find that the base metal or metal oxides on the sample have significant effect over the reaction temperature and reactivity. The roles of the base on hydrogen production from biomass will be discussed in detail in this talk.
