Many catalysts for energy applications such as fuel cell electrocatalysts and Fischer Tropsch synthesis call for bimetallic particles. This paper presents a simple, rational method to synthesize bimetallic particles. Via Strong Electrostatic Adsorption, metal coordination complexes such as Pt and Pd ammines are selectively adsorbed onto a carbon or oxide suported metal oxide such as cobalt, copper, iron, and molybdenum oxide, such that after reduction, bimetallic particles are produced. These can be core-shell or alloy particles, as determined by STEM/EELS, EXAFS/XANES, and TPR.
