Environment responsive membranes are being examined for a wide range of applications such as bioseparations and controlled release of drugs. In this presentation, we discuss the use of environment-responsive, hydrophilized microporous membranes for hydrophobic interaction chromatography of proteins. These membranes can be made to switch between hydrophobic and hydrophilic states in a reversible manner by controlling salt concentration. In contrast, media used for conventional hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) remain hydrophobic through a separation process. These environment responsive membranes therefore give better resolutions than conventional HIC media. Proteins with very subtle hydrophobicity differences can be separated. Some examples of these are discussed.
