Studies have shown that performance in the first chemical engineering course has a large impact on student retention in the discipline. One successful approach to teaching the course is to engage the students in repetitive problem solving. In this project, we describe our efforts to create a workbook on material and energy balance problems that relate to the generation of hydrogen and their resulting use in fuel cells. These problems can be used in parallel with the classic text by Felder, Rousseau, and Newell or as a component of a separate course on hydrogen energy.
