Mathematical Modelling of Paper Mill Calenders

Dr.Neel Kanth, Applied Sciences, APIIT SD India, Panipat, India and Amiya K. Ray, Department of Paper Technology, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Roorkee,India, Saharanpur, India

Calendering is an important operation in many industries such as paper, polymer, leather and textile, mainly with an aim, to increase the smoothness (or to reduce the roughness) of surface of sheet of substrate and also to enhance gloss in some special quality of substrate (coated paper for example). Presently the models available constitute models for nip mechanics, steady and unsteady state heat transfer modelling and model related to stress –strain behaviour (called viscoelastic model). The nip mechanics model is useful to evaluate the nip width, maximum nip pressure, and pressure distribution in nip. Though the above models are available in literature, these are not free from restrictions. There are some limitations of the models which fit to a certain situation of specific calender type. An attempt has been made in this investigation to extend the model of Hertz and that of Meijers using more than three terms of the infinite series obtained from integral equation. Further the sensitivity of additional terms on the response are to be compared.
