The adsorption of sulfur dioxide on magnetic nanoparticles is examined. Microbreakthrough experiments were used to quantify the ability of magnetic nanoparticles to adsorb sulfur dioxide from air. The results show that the magnetic nanoparticles out perform traditional activated carbon. The adsorption capacity of the materials is noteworthy given the 150 m2/g surface area of the magnetic nanoparticles. Additionally, the nanoparticles exhibit a 23% decrease in the remnant magnetization, a 20% decrease in saturation magnetization, and a 9% decrease in coercivity. Adsorbents that provide a magnetic signal upon adsorption could have broad implications on adsorption-based separations.
