ReDrop is a Monte Carlo drop-population balance tool that follows a discrete number of drops during their entire lifetime in a column. It has been applied for several physical extraction systems as well as reactive systems with pulsed sieve tray columns. With ReDrop the separation efficiency as well as the operation limits like flooding can be predicted.Application may be extended to Rotating Disc Contactors and the Kuehni extractor since programme modules for both extractors have been implemented.
Simulation with ReDrop considers drop sedimentation, drop breakage and coalescence as well as mass transfer and axial dispersion. The simulation tool has been validated with different experimental data. Separation performance, hold-up and simulated Sauter mean diameter agree well with experiments.
With the help of ReDrop the experimental demand may be limited to lab scale experiments with single droplets and does not need experiments in pilot-plant scale. Lab scale data are needed to specify system-specific model parameters.
