Cotton fabrics can be converted to carbon fabrics by conventional annealing in inert atmosphere. Magnetic carbon nanocomposite fabrics decorated with uniformly distributed iron oxide nanoparticles will be fabricated via microwave-assisted and conventional annealing processes. Both annealing method and purging gas species on the hybrid structure morphology and nanoparticle crystalline structure will be studied and their corresponding Cr(VI) removal performance from polluted water will be comparatively investigated. Cotton fabrics, carbon fabrics and carbon nanocomposite fabrics will be comparatively studied for their Cr(VI) removal performance. And also, the Cr(VI) concentration, adsorbent loading and adsorption time will be systematically investigated to determine the adsorption capacity and rate. The open structure of the nanocomposite fabrics are projected to remain high treatment capacity. The decorated nanoparticles are expected to enlarge the Cr(VI) removal efficiency and capability. The Cr(VI) removal mechanisms will be exploited by studying the magnetization change before and after adsorption treatment.
