The purpose of this study is to review the state-of-the-art uses of engineered biochar. In this review, published peer-reviewed articles from 2000 to date were retrieved. Information obtained indicates that engineered biochar can serve to control emissions of heavy metals and excess fertilizers; and for the better understanding of conditions to produce biochar. The materials and methods used to make biochar are significant factors towards potential applications. This preliminary review indicates that there are several applications for biochar that could be cost-effective and more sustainable than conventional means.
