Abstract -Methane Adsorption Using MOF

AICHE Student Conference – Poster Competition

Storage and Transportation of -the main component of natural gas- has been one of the difficulties of natural gas utilization. Adsorbed natural gas  has developed to be a safer alternative technology in which the natural gas is adsorbed by a porous material such as activated carbon or MOF. This technology is preferred because it is obtained at low pressure 5-35 bar and room temperature. It is also economically favorable because it does not require the use of complex and expensive liquefactions equipment, also the natural gas should not be compressed to high pressure 200-248.

This research studies the capacity of adsorption of methane in MOF at three different temperatures 15, 25 and 35 C.  Isotherm data were generated. Using adsorbing unit filled with 40 g of MOF , the adsorber has a volume of 124.55 ml. Mass balance was developed to measure the number of methane moles that was adsorbed into the surface of MOF. Calculations were done using Matlab and Toth equation to generate adsorption isotherms. Temperature, the physical properties of MOF such as packing density and micropore area play important role in determining the amount adsorbed of methane .
