In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling was developed for solid suspension in an agitation vessel. Two types of impellers were used: Scaba and A310. To validate the model, the simulated results for particle distribution at the vessel bottom are compared with the visualization experiments.  The simulation results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data, which suggest that the present CFD model can capture the essential features in solid-liquid flow systems. Owing to the gathering of the particles in the vessel center caused by the radial flow, the particle distribution shows a crisscross pattern for radial type impeller (i.e., Scaba impellers). The particle distribution in the vessel agitated by A310 was more homogeneous than that of the others due to both of the axial and downward flow nature of A310. Furthermore, modified correlations based on the Zwietering equation were obtained to account for the effect of impeller clearance from the experiments.
