Sustainable biorefineries must address both feedstock availability and market conditions. They must be able to use multiple feedstocks with minimum process adjustments and be able to produce fungible intermediates as well as end product biofuels and biochemicals. An advantaged way to unlock the value-added potential of biomass is to convert it to intermediate cellulosic sugars. Cellulosic sugars can then be converted in situ or be shipped to a remote location to be converted into a variety of valuable biochemicals, fuels and biomaterials. In many cases, these bio-routes are competitive to traditional fossil fuel processes and are further advantaged by positive environmental attributes and benefits to the local supply chain.
