Biocompatible polypeptides are the main structural component of hydrogels, which can be used for cell studies and biocompatible materials such as wound filler. Two of these synthetic polymers, poly(propargyl-L-glutamate), PPLG, and poly(allyl-L-glutamate), PALG, are of particular interest due to the accessibility of their pendant alkyne and alkene groups, respectively, for click chemistry. The attachment of various functionalities to the polymer backbone allows for mimicry of the extracellular matrix. A general scheme for the traditional organic synthesis of these polymers has been developed and shows promise for extended study, further modification of properties, and a variety of applications.
