Nanostructured, tailored ZnCo2O4 is synthesized by solution combustion synthesis using two fuels, glycine and citric acid, to explore how reaction conditions impact electrochemical performance as a Li-ion anode. Owing to the unique combustion reaction mechanism, the novel strategy of using mixed fuels and ammonium nitrate creates anode material with improved cycling stability and capacity. Characterization shows a mesoporous spinel product, composed of nanoparticles assembled into micron-sized secondary structures, with properties varied by the fuel ratio and type. A stable capacity of 1,200 mAh g-1 is achieved at C/10 and 1000 mAh g-1 at 1C, showing high energy and power capabilities as compared to the bulk material. Based on an understanding of the reaction mechanisms and influence of reaction parameters, solution combustion synthesis is a powerful and flexible technique to produce superior electrode materials.
