As humans breathe in, the natural metabolism of oxygen results in the production of free radicals and other reactive oxygen species (ROS) that act as oxidants and are harmful to the body. These ROS can be neutralized by controlled introduction of antioxidants into a system. However, if too many antioxidants enter a cell at once, antioxidant toxicity can occur and damage the cell. In this work, we are examining a biocompatible, hydrolytically degradable hydrogel that may offer a solution to controlled antioxidant delivery. As these hydrogels degrade, they release cystamine, which acts as an effective antioxidant upon reduction. Throughout these experiments, we are examining closely the properties and synthesis of these hydrogels and determining which, if any, synthesis variables can be manipulated to gain further control over the rate of gel degradation and cystamine release.
