In this work the effect of different carbon materials: carbonized palm nut shells (PNC), graphite (G) and carbonized anthracite coal (CAC), on the structural changes and hydrogen storage properties of magnesium were investigated and compared. Samples of Mg containing 20wt. % additive were prepared by milling in a rotary ball mill and later hydrogenated using a PCTPro hydrogenation equipment. Structural and phase evolution were investigated using X-ray diffractometry (XRD).Milling magnesium with carbonized palm nut shells for 2 hours showed much structural change in magnesium compared with other carbon materials in this study.

The hydrogen storage capacity of the resulting nanocomposites were ranked in this manner 80Mg-20PNC>80Mg-20CAC>80Mg-20G.
