Lower olefins, particularly ethylene (C2H4), propylene (C3H6), and butylenes (C4H8), are important raw materials for chemical production, which are mainly produced by catalytic cracking of crude oil. Since China is rich in coal but lack of oil, it is meaningful to develop technologies for production of light olefins directly from coal-based syngas via the Fischer-Tropsch reaction (FTO), while the key factor is the design and synthesis of catalysts with high catalytic activity and good olefine selectivity.

Herein, low-temperature crystal splitting has been developed to synthesize Mn-based mixed metal oxides with large surface area, impressively active surface and excellent catalytic activity. The catalytic activities of as-synthesized Mn-based catalysts for FTO reaction have been tested and the relationship between surface structures of the catalysts and their catalytic activities have been investigated by mean of Operando spectroscopy. The mechanism of the catalytic reaction has been revealed through the determination of the catalytic active center, thus providing guidelines for further synthesis of the catalysts.
