Development of Biology Friendly Tools for Lab Automation and DNA Construction

Gregory Linshiz, Nina Stawski and Nathan Hillson, Joint BioEnergy Institute, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, CA

Many labor-intensive biological tasks, such as the construction and cloning of DNA, are prime candidates for laboratory automation. Unfortunately, more effort is often required to program a robotic platform than would be saved by the automation itself, and software is frequently unavailable to design complex tasks. Here, we present two open-source tools under development, a biology-friendly robot programming language (PaR-PaR) and hierarchical protocol design automation software (DNA Constructor), that step toward enabling biological laboratory automation.
