Indonesia enjoys sizeable renewable energy resources to supply the energy demand; however, the complexity of its geography incurs challenges for the development of electricity system’s sustainability. A multi-objective optimization model was developed to support decision makers in assessing the role of renewable energy in regional power generation planning. Six regions are grouped and five development scenarios were proposed. The results show that renewable energy plays an important role in the sustainability of regional electricity system development, particularly in Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi because of their abundant resources relative to their electricity demand. The regions with least renewable potential, Maluku & Nusa Tenggara and Papua, still suffer from the least sustainability compared to other regions. Jawa and Bali possess the largest renewables sources, the sustainability this region is to be considerably moderate. The results also indicate that it is essential for the decision makers to prioritize the development of renewable energy.
