As global population and affluence continues to rise, demand for consumer products is also increasing. Accordingly, there is growing emphasis on product sustainability and creating tools to aid designers in designing sustainable products; however, these tools are retrospective and require fully-formulated designs. Currently, there are no early-phase design processes that lead to both innovative and sustainable products. There is an opportunity to advance how mechanical engineering students learn about sustainability and innovation in design. This research focuses on the creation of a new product design process, a case study for which is embedded it in a graduate-level course. In this course, student learning focuses on both product innovation and product sustainability, through the combination of user-driven design and the progression through six sustainable concept generation lenses. The sustainable design method employed in the case study course shows promise in that students designed new products that are both sustainable and innovative.
