476508 Keynote: Life Cycle Oriented Decision Making for Sustainable Manufacturing: From Product Design to Supply Chain Management

Tuesday, October 25, 2016: 13:30
Fu Zhao, Mechanical Engineering/Environmental and Ecological Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN

Manufacturing is one of the most important sectors influencing global sustainability and researchers have been undertaking strategic activities focused on sustainable manufacturing. Sustainable manufacturing requires simultaneous consideration of economic, environmental, and social implications associated with the entire life cycle of the products manufactured i.e. from raw material extraction to end of life management. In this talk, recent research into product design, process planning, operation scheduling, manufacturing processes, supply chain management to advance sustainable manufacturing (especially environmental sustainability of manufacturing enterprises) conducted at Purdue University and other places is reviewed. It should be noted that sustainable manufacturing decisions made at one level may have impacts prorogated to other levels, and the interdependent life cycle stages of a product will make decision making even more challenging. Fortunately, emerging manufacturing paradigms i.e. digital manufacturing and industry 4.0 may open up numerous opportunities to solve these challenges.
